The Global Fund Board has begun the process of selecting its next Chair and Vice-Chair. The terms of the current Chair (Simon Bland) and Vice-Chair (Dr Mphu Ramatlapeng) will come to end following the May 2013 Board meeting.

According to the By-Laws of the Global Fund, the positions alternate between individuals drawn from the donor voting bloc and the implementer voting bloc of the Board (although the Chair and Vice-Chair do not represent the views of any one constituency or bloc). Mr Bland is from the donor bloc and Dr Ramatlapeng is from the implementers bloc. Thus, the next Chair will come from the implementer bloc and the next Vice-Chair from the donor bloc.

Historically the donor and implementer blocs have each defined their own process by which to identify candidates and nominate them.

A paper prepared for the Board meeting in Geneva outlines the following timelines:

  • September 2012Ā ā€“ Discussion during the 27thĀ Board meeting on the nomination and selection process to be followed by the donor and implementer blocs.
  • Septemberā€“November 2012Ā ā€“ Constituency discussions on potential nominees.
  • November 2012Ā ā€“ Discussion during the 28thĀ Board meeting within blocs on potential nominees coming out of constituency consultations.
  • January 2013Ā ā€“ Formal call for nominations for Board Chair and Vice-Chair positions.
  • February 2013Ā ā€“ Nominations sent to the Office of the Board Chair.
  • March 2013Ā ā€“ Formal appointment of incoming Board Chair and Vice-Chair by electronic vote (or in-person vote in the event of a Board Retreat).
  • May 2013Ā ā€“ Incoming Board Chair and Vice-Chair attend 29thĀ Board meeting for formal introduction.

The Board paper on this topic (Document GF-B27-09) should be available shortly atĀ www.theglobalfund.org/en/board/meetings/twentyseventh.
