ABSTRACT Incremental funding in the amount of up to $458.8 million has been approved for renewal of 15 grants from seven applicants. The largest awards are for HIV grants in South Africa and Zambia.

The Board of the Global Fund to Fights AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has approved funding in the amount of up to $458.8 million for seven applicants submitting requests for continued funding. See the table for details.

In approving the funding, the Board was acting on recommendations from the Technical Review Panel (TRP) and the Secretariat, including the Grant Approvals Committee (GAC), as reflected in GAC Report GF-B29-ER5. The largest awards went to South Africa ($216.7 million for five HIV grants) and Zambia ($155.4 million for two HIV grants).

South Africa also received $90.6 million as an interim applicant under the new funding model (see separate GFO article).

All of the amounts shown in the table are ceilings; the amounts finally committed could be less.

(Note that the amounts shown in the table represent incremental funding for the grants. The total budgets for the next implementation period will usually be higher than what is shown because they include unspent funds from the last implementation period.)

One of the HIV grants for Multi-Country East Asia & the Pacific (MEI-011-G01-H) involves Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines and Timor-Leste. The other HIV grant (MEA-011-G01-H) involves Bangladesh, Indonesia, Lao, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines and Viet Nam.

The breakdown of funding by disease is as follows: HIV $418.5 million (91%), malaria $25.8 million (6%) and TB $14.5 million (3%).

In its report, the GAC provided comments on the funding awards to individual countries (see separate articles on GFO Live). GFO will report on some of these comments in the coming weeks.

Information for this article was taken from Board Decision GF-B29-EDP8 and from GF-B29-ER5, the Report of Secretariat Funding Recommendations. These documents are not available on the Global Fund website.
