ABSTRACT We correct an error in an article in GFO 175 concerning the number of grant renewals approved by the Global Fund Board in December 2011 and January 2012.

In an article on grant renewals inĀ GFO 175, published on 6 February 2012, we reported that “in December 2011 and January 2012, the Global Fund Board approved in principle 18 grant renewals at a full Phase 2 cost of $429 million. The amounts approved represented 83% of the amounts that had been requested by applicants.” In fact, in December 2011, the Board also approved a number of renewals dating back to November 2011. (The Board usually approves renewals in a block once a month.) Thus, our article should have read:

“In December 2011 and January 2012, the Global Fund Board approved in principle 36 grant renewals at a full Phase 2 cost of $904 million. The amounts approved represented 80% of the amounts that had been requested by applicants.”

The Global Fund Secretariat pointed out toĀ GFOĀ that it is not really useful to compare how much was approved by the Board with how much the countries requested because there are sometimes mistakes in the amounts requested (e.g., failure to include an element in the budget), which have to be sorted out in discussions between the Secretariat and the applicants.
