Accountability for Global Fund Grants in Malawi
The Global Fund is the single most important source of funding for HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria in Malawi, where it has invested approximately US$936 million since 2003. Malawiās HIV/AIDS prevalence (9.1%) among adults aged 15-49 years ranks among the highest in the world and the country is also among the high burden HIV/AIDS/TB countries. Moreover, malaria remains a public health issue as it accounts for 30% of all outpatient visits and 40% of all hospitalization among under 5 years old. Corruption levels in Malawi remain high although significantly lower than levels in neighbouring countries, or countries in the same income categories.
