An Effective Watchdog…

  • Is objective and manages their fear of reprisal.
  • Asks critical questions regarding the systems, policies, or processes they monitor.
  • Highlights risks of waste or inefficiency in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Fights to reduce barriers to information access.

Since the end of 2010, the Mentoring Watchdogs Project has reached 19 African countries, promoting watchdog work and developing partnerships with people and organizations that monitor the Global Fund. Tracking and reporting on international aid flows is a challenge rarely achieved alone — it requires collective effort, legitimacy, credibility, and a strong appreciation of the value of accountability.

Our mission is to strengthen capacity, increase participation, and empower watchdogs across Africa to speak boldly for transparency and accountability.

Key Skills Imparted During Mentorship

  • Analyzing country-level data and grant/program information.
  • Assessing risks that threaten successful grant implementation.
  • Encouraging critical dialogue on identified gaps.
  • Examining accountability systems and how they link to national health initiatives.
  • Developing strategies for more effective watchdog work.

Watchdog: Raise Your Voice for Accountability!

Reporting concerns (whistleblowing) is essential to identifying possible illegal or suspected illegal actions, including fraud, corruption, harassment, discrimination, and violations of human or environmental rights.

You do not need to prove wrongdoing — however, detailed information helps ensure proper investigation. Aidspan guarantees confidentiality and allows anonymous reporting, although contact information may help us follow up effectively.
