In April 2002, the Global Fund approved "Round 1" grants to 36 countries plus three multi-country regions. This has led to the need for 69 grant agreements. One year later, the situation regarding these 69 grant agreements is as follows:

• The Fund has signed 47 grant agreements worth $367 m. over 2 years. (Fund disbursement has commenced for 37 of these agreements. Total disbursements thus far equal $20 m.)

• For 16 grant agreements worth $178 m., grant agreements are "pending", but not yet signed. These grant agreements relate to Indonesia ($23 m.), Nigeria ($28 m.), South Africa plus KwaZulu Natal ($41 m.), Tanzania ($5 m.), Thailand ($38 m.), Zambia ($32 m.) and Zimbabwe ($10 m.).

• For 6 grants agreements worth $32 m., it is not known when grant agreements will be signed. These grants agreements relate to Cambodia (an NGO project, $4 m.), Chile ($14 m.), Korea DPR ($2 m.), Mali ($2 m.) and Viet Nam ($10 m.).

• For 2 regional NGO grants there will be no grant agreement, because approval was not received from the relevant CCMs.

These figures were derived in an analysis based primarily on data obtained on 5 May from the Fund's web site. The data were current as of 2 May. (See www.globalfundatm.org/commitments&disbursements.html.) For grants where there will be more than one Principal Recipient (PR), one grant agreement is signed with each PR. A country-by-country listing of the current status of all Round 1 grants is shown below. A key to some of the terms used is as follows:
