Current Status of Round 1 Grants

In April 2002, the Global Fund approved "Round 1" grants to 36 countries plus three multi-country regions. This has led to the need for 69 grant agreements.

One year later, the situation regarding these 69 grant agreements is as follows:


Paris Meeting on "Fund the Fund"

Advocacy and activist NGOs from around the world will be holding a meeting in Paris on March 28-29 to discuss development of a coordinated campaign for full funding of the Global Fund. The meeting is organized by the French groups AIDES and Act Up Paris, and the US group Health GAP. Details are available at http://fundthefund.free.fr.


On the Role of NGOs

The issue of partnership has been raised here at the meeting on numerous occasions. And for good reason. It is at the core of our credo of "doing business differently".


Funding The Fund

In his State of the Union address on 28 January, US President George Bush made a dramatic commitment to provide $10 billion of new funding for AIDS over the years 2004-2008, in addition to the $5 billion of expenditure already projected for that period.


Approved Grants, Alphabetically by Country

The Global Fund Board today approved Round 2 grants as follows. Some countries received more than one grant. Most grants were in response to proposals from CCMs, but a few were in response to proposals from Sub-CCMs or from NGOs. This table shows the country totals, in alphabetical order.


The October Board Meeting - Key Developments

The Global Fund's third Board meeting, held in Geneva on 10-11October 2002, was, according to Executive Director Richard Feachem, "a huge improvement on the first two Board meetings," but it still left many participants frustrated when time ran out before the agenda was completed.
