New tender for bednets produces projected savings of $93 million over two years

As a result of a new tender for insecticide-treated mosquito nets, The Global Fund projects that it will achieve savings of $93 million over the next two years. The Global Fund expects to make $350 million in mosquito net purchases in that time period through its pooled procurement mechanism.

Malaria Bednet Distribution in Sub-Saharan Africa Is About Half of What Is Needed

Of the approximately 80 million insecticide-treated nets distributed through Global Fund–supported programmes in 2012, about 66 million (73%) went to sub-Saharan African countries. This is well below half the 150 million insecticide-treated nets that the World Health Organisation estimates are needed annually to protect all populations at risk of malaria in this region.

The Global Fund Board recently approved two Round 8 malaria grant renewals for Nigeria worth $225 million. This amount included $50 million in “new” money, which will be used to purchase bed nets.
