Multi-country grant for Southern Africa receives $12 million

On 22 February 2019, the Global Fund Board approved one multi-country grant, one matching funds request and one set of interventions on the Unfunded Quality Demand (UQD) Register –– worth a total of $16.0 million. The Board was acting on the recommendations of the Technical Review Panel (TRP) and the Grant Approvals Committee (GAC). This was the 17th batch of approvals from the 2017–2019 allocations.

Another $66 million was approved for interventions on the UQD Register

On 31 January 2019, the Global Fund Board approved three country grants worth $13.4 million. It also approved two multicountry grants valued at $22.5 million. The Board was acting on the recommendations of the Technical Review Panel (TRP) and the Grant Approvals Committee (GAC). See Tables 1 and 2 for listings of the country and multi-country grants.

New regional grant has sights set on malaria elimination in Southern Africa

Elimination 8 (E8) has set the formidable target of full malaria elimination in Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Swaziland by 2020. Termed the “frontline four”, these countries are nearing elimination of the disease after achieving a 75% decline between 2000 and 2012.

A ministerial-level meeting took place on 25 March in South Africa, aiming to harmonize tracking, tracing, diagnosis and referrals for people affiliated with southern Africa's lucrative mining sector -- all of whom are at high risk for contracting tuberculosis.

Phase 2 Funding for Namibia Round 2 Malaria RCC Grant Approved

The Global Fund Board has approved Phase 2 funding for a Round 2 malaria rolling continuation channel grant in Namibia. The principal recipient (PR) for this grant is the National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) in the Ministry of Health and Social Services. In approving the Phase 2 funding, the Board was acting on recommendations from the Grants Renewal Panel in the Secretariat.

OIG Releases Reports on Audits in Namibia and Kyrgyzstan, and on a Diagnostic Review in the Caribbean
