Policy on working in challenging operating environments adopted

It might surprise you to learn that challenging operating environments account for a third of the global disease burden for HIV, TB, and malaria, and a third of Global Fund investments. (For malaria alone, the proportion is 50%.) This makes COEs particularly critical to the Fund’s mission and objectives.

At its meeting in Abidjan on 26-27 April, the Board adopted a policy on COEs.

Existing HSS grant to South Sudan re-programmed

The Global Fund Board has approved funding in the amount of € 16.4 million ($18.4 million) for a malaria grant to Guinea-Bissau. The Board also approved additional funding for an existing health services strengthening grant to South Sudan. The Board was acting on recommendations from the Technical Review Panel and the Grant Approval Committee.

The Global Fund may reduce funding for Nigeria’s HIV and TB grants by more than $5 million because it is having difficulty recovering outstanding amounts owing following an audit and an investigation conducted by the Office of the Inspector General in 2011.
